SEBASTIAN INLET - WHERE THE OCEAN MEETS THE LAGOON

The topic of our presentation this month is on the Sebastian inlet and the District of the same name.  The inlet has been in the news regularly for the last few years as they have been working on permits to establish a dedicated channel from the Inlet to the Intracoastal Waterway.  Our guest this month is Marty Smithson, Administrator of the Sebastian Inlet District.  He will give a presentation on the colorful history of the inlet, its environmental significance to the region as well as its economic benefits.  Marty will also talk about current and future projects for what is one of the most dynamic inlets on Florida's east coast.
We will also be raffling the canoe model that we have been displaying at our general meetings and other events throughout the winter season.  This will be your last chance to buy a ticket and have the chance to win the canoe!  By the way for all you trivia buffs out there, we understand that this identical canoe model was displayed recently on the "Boston Legal" TV program!
Our meeting will be on Tuesday, May 22, 7:30 PM at the North Indian River County Library in Sebastian.  All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served following the presentation.

NATIONAL RIVER CLEANUP WEEK, JUNE 2-10, 2007

June 2 - 10 is National River Cleanup Week, hosted by the American Rivers organization, of which the Friends is a member. "The nation's leading river advocacy organization is encouraging citizens to take part in the annual National River Cleanup Week, presented by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and set for June 2-10, 2007."
We will be hosting our own local river cleanup in order to participate in this national event.  Our local event will take place on Sunday, June 10 from 8:30 AM until noon.  We will be kayaking the South Prong of the St. Sebastian River with the folks from Kayaks, etc. of Vero Beach, which is one of our corporate members.  This is our first trip using kayaks and we are looking forward to the event.  We will be launching from Dale Wimbrow Park, which is on Roseland Road in Sebastian.
American Rivers will be awarding prizes to volunteers who participate in cleanup events.  You can enter for photo, video and essay contests following the event.  For general and contest information, please visit the National River Cleanup Week website at www.nationalrivercleanup.org.
If you would like to participate in our kayak/cleanup trip, please contact Kayaks, etc. at 772-794-9900 or email us at the address above.  Reservations are required and the cost of the kayak trip is $10 per person for members or $15 for non-members.  A free picnic lunch will be provided at the park following the trip, so please stay and join us.
