FSSR Newsletter - September 2006

Our program this month has to do with environmental permitting.  Ken Oristaglio, Senior Permitting Supervisor with Indian River County will be our guest to give a presentation on the rules and regulations the county uses to determine when and where to issue permits for construction that will have an impact on wildlife and threatened or endangered species.
One of the species that raises concern in our area is the gopher tortoise.  The current regulations provide for "incidental take" permits, to allow development of parcels where gopher tortoises exist, without having to avoid or move the tortoises or their burrows.  The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is reviewing the status of the tortoise and considering changes to permit allowances and conditions.  For more information on gopher tortoises, you can visit the Gopher Tortoise Council website at
The program will be Tuesday, September 26, 7:30 PM at the North Indian River County Library on Sebastian Blvd. in Sebastian.  All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served following the presentation.

October is membership renewal time. We run all memberships from October through September each year.  If you initially joined and paid dues between April 1 and September 30, we credit your membership through until October 1 in your second year of membership.  The date following your last name on the mailing label of our newsletter is the month in which our records reflect that your membership either did or will expire.  If you feel the date is not correct, or have a question about your membership, please call our treasurer Shirley Kilkelly at 772-589-5062 or Tim Glover at 772-589-0636; or send an email or write to us at the addresses in this newsletter.  Please include a phone number or email address where you can be reached.
This past spring, we sent out information about making your membership information available to other Friends members, for the purpose of "networking" and optional features that you can participate in or subscribe too.  We want to thank you for your response to this mailing - some even sent in early membership renewals!  If you want to change any of the information you have provided to us, or subscribe to the electronic-only version of our newsletter, just let us know at any time.
We thank you all for your continued support!
