PROVIDING BUFFERS ALONG THE ST. SEBASTIAN RIVER

In our July 2006 issue, we told about the recent approval given by the Indian River County Commission, to purchase several properties along the South Prong of the St. Sebastian River.  This month, Roland DeBlois, Chief Environmental Planner with Indian River County will be our guest to tell us more about the county's efforts to provide buffers along the river, and other efforts to protect the river.  Mr. DeBlois will also be talking more about one of the county's recent purchases - the Russell Grove property and their proposal to restore that property to its natural habitat and provide for public access and recreation.
The meeting will be on Tuesday, November 28, 7:30 PM at the North Indian River County Library in Sebastian. This is also our membership renewal time of the year and renewals will be accepted at the meeting.  All are welcome and refreshments will be served following the presentation.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Almost two years ago, Troy Rice, Director of the Indian River Lagoon Program gave us a presentation on the stormwater park they were developing in Sebastian.  This project is located off Englar Drive and will draw water from the Elkam Waterway, filtering it before it continues downstream and enters the St. Sebastian River.
Troy's presentation showed us the beauty of this park and told us that it would have recreational features that would eventually be open for public enjoyment.  He also solicited our help at the time, saying that they could use volunteers to plant native plants, in the final stages of the project.  They are now ready for that help and will be having a work day on Friday, December 8 to plant grass plugs along the shoreline of the ponds.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Bruce Zingman at 772-228-9938.  If you would like more information about the stormwater park, you can view an excerpt of the PowerPoint presentation given to the Friends by Troy in January 2005, on the "Photo Gallery" page of our website.
